Pioneering advisor conference comes to Miami Beach with volatility, crypto and AI as hot topics

Miami Beach Hosts Future Proof Conference

Miami Beach, Florida, is bustling with spring break revelers, and amidst this lively atmosphere, the Future Proof Citywide conference has commenced, drawing in 2,500 financial advisors, family office representatives, and wealth management professionals. This event aims to break down traditional barriers and unite three distinct groups: the established Wall Street institutions, the rising cohort of Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs), and the emerging alternative investment community, which includes crypto investors and hedge funds. This marks the fifth iteration of the Future Proof conference, and it is the first to take place in Miami after previous events in Huntington Beach, California. Matt Middleton, the Founder and CEO of Future Proof, emphasized that while the California festival targeted RIAs, the Miami event casts a wider net, encompassing the entire wealth and asset management ecosystem, including family offices and ultra-high-net-worth individuals.

Networking Takes Center Stage

The conference, set against the scenic backdrop of South Beach, is primarily focused on networking opportunities. As the event kicked off on Sunday afternoon, attendees like Jeff Corey and Lincoln Hurney from Claro Advisors in Boston sought shelter from the sweltering 85-degree heat while attending a discussion on private equity and credit. Corey highlighted three main objectives for their participation: to engage with fellow financial advisors facing similar challenges, to explore responsible uses of technology and artificial intelligence, and to reconnect with acquaintances from previous Future Proof events. This commitment to building relationships with other RIAs and investment professionals is a significant draw for many attendees. Alex Barned from Absolute Capital Management shared his enthusiasm for reconnecting with peers, noting that the conference provides valuable opportunities to meet key decision-makers from prominent RIAs. He mentioned that they formed numerous new connections at the last gathering, enhancing their visibility among clients.

Valuable Content and Insights

Doug Gill from Castleview Partners in Dallas echoed the sentiment that networking is essential, while also emphasizing the quality of the content presented. As a TAMP provider that assists asset managers in optimizing account management, Gill expressed that meeting even a single boutique asset manager or a $100 million RIA could justify his attendance. Beyond networking, the conference features informative sessions designed to help financial advisors grow their businesses and manage their operations more effectively. Topics range from succession planning to family office governance and the transfer of generational wealth.

Cryptocurrency and Market Trends Discussed

Cryptocurrency, particularly Bitcoin, is a focal point for many participants. On Monday morning, a high-profile interview with Strategy’s Michael Saylor is scheduled, as his firm holds a substantial Bitcoin reserve and has strong views on the cryptocurrency’s future. Market fluctuations are also a hot topic, with interviews lined up with Fundstrat’s co-founder, Tom Lee, to discuss market trajectories. Additionally, my colleague Dom Chu will provide insights on macroeconomic trends through discussions with notable figures such as Brian Belski from BMO Capital and Gabriela Santos from J.P. Morgan Asset Management. Dan Ives from Wedbush Securities will also share his perspectives on the ongoing AI revolution.

Innovative Networking Approaches

This Miami Beach edition of Future Proof lacks some of the quirky classes that characterized the California events, such as unique culinary experiences. However, the primary draw remains the networking opportunities facilitated by technology, as Middleton pointed out. The event encourages attendees to reconnect with existing contacts while also aiming to broaden their professional networks. A “speed dating” format has been introduced, pairing investment professionals with sell-side providers for brief, focused meetings. At the last Future Proof event in September, an impressive 32,000 meetings were arranged, ensuring that the traditional Wall Street sell-side community remains engaged and satisfied.
